What goes on in
a lesson?
A lesson includes a variety of
activities based on student need and teacher experience.
- performance of prepared musical material
- evaluation of musical performance
- questions that prompt the student to think
- suggestions for improvement by the teacher
- guidance for musicality and phrasing through
guided imagery and storytelling
- indirect procedures-for example: if a student
has difficulty with insufficient air-working on complete exhale (rather
than inhale) or if a student has difficulty with embouchure placement
or pressure-working on air-flow
- assistance in setting reasonable step-wise
practice goals
- development of a framework for non-judgmental
self-evaluation
- musical demonstrations by the teacher
- discussion and demonstration of respiration as
related to playing an instrument
- discussion and demonstration of body "use" as
related to playing an instrument
- discussion of practice flaws
- discussion of practice methods (both musically
generalized and trumpet related)
- discussion of musical priorities in refining a
musical passage
- discussion of musical interaction with self
