How long are lessons?
- 30 min.
- an additional lesson (weekly or as needed) may
be scheduled for 30 min.
In some special cases, particularly for
adult students, other lesson lengths may be scheduled (as the
last lesson of the day at or 7:30 pm)
Why are they this length?
- A longer lesson is not necessarily a more
helpful or efficient one.
- The teacher can identify deficiencies and
assist in student improvements within a few minutes.
- Student mental fatigue sets in after 20
minutes.
- The student's ability to concentrate becomes
difficult to sustain.
- Student physical fatigue sets in after 20
minutes.
- The student's ability to continue physically
playing diminishes.
- This is the time increment students should
practice in regularly.
- For example: 1 hour practice should be divided
into 2-30 min. sessions or 1.5 hours should be divided into 3-30 min.
sessions for the same reasons as listed above
- The shorter lesson length allows monthly
tuition to remain affordable.
- The shorter lesson length allows for more
available teaching time each day and week.
- The shorter lesson length allows for more
student times for make-ups and additional (extra) lessons (for audition
preparation).
Is this enough time to
accomplish something?
- Yes, if the student is well prepared with
assigned material and ready to play and learn when their lesson begins.
- The focus of each lesson should be essentially
on subject area (technique, etudes, jazz material, etc.).
- The student is directed by the teacher
verbally at the end of each lesson in regards to what should be
prepared for the following lesson.
- The student can email the instructor if he
has any questions about what to prepare for the next lesson.
- The focus of the lesson will usually shift
from week to week (unless an audition or recital is approaching and
further detail merits multiple listenings by the teacher) in order for
the student and teacher to cover a wide variety of material.
- The student should have one subject area
(technique, etudes, jazz, etc.) well prepared for performance and
discussion at each lesson.
- The student should have additional material
prepared as a back-up (in case everything within the subject matter
is flawless and no discussion or improvements are necessary).
- Warming-up at home prior to the lesson is
helpful in maximizing lesson time.
